This Is for Learners Who Are Serious About Speaking
- Beginners who want structured progression and a personalized learning plan — not random YouTube videos
- Heritage learners reconnecting with family language, history, and culture
- Partners of Filipinos who want to join the conversation at home
- People tired of apps that never get them to real, lasting fluency
- Learners who’ve tried self-study and want guided accountability and clear direction
Why These Lessons Work
A Clear Roadmap
Every lesson is part of a structured progression. You’ll always know where you are, where you’re going, and what to focus on before the next session.
Authentic, Custom-Built Material
I create and adapt lesson material specifically for my students — using real, everyday Tagalog that reflects how people actually speak. No outdated textbook dialogue. No overly stiff or artificial phrasing. Just language you can use in real life.
Guided Speaking Practice
You’ll speak from your very first lesson — with structured prompts that build your ability to express yourself naturally and develop long-term fluency.
Supportive, Pattern-Based Feedback
Mistakes are expected — and encouraged. You’re never judged for trying. We use errors as useful signals, identifying patterns so you improve steadily without fear or hesitation.
What Happens in a Lesson
Your First Lesson Is Structured and Purposeful
Your first session isn’t a trial run — it’s a deliberate starting point. We use it to understand exactly where you are, what you need, and how to build a personalized learning plan that fits your goals and schedule.
- Level and needs assessment — we establish your current abilities honestly, without pressure
- Discussion of your goals — whether conversational fluency, reconnecting with family, or deeper cultural understanding
- Immediate guided speaking practice — you’ll produce real Tagalog in the very first session
- Creation of your personalized learning plan — a clear roadmap shaped around your specific goals and pace
Review
We revisit what you worked on last time — reinforcing vocabulary, grammar, or phrases until they stick.
Comprehensible Input
We work through a short dialogue or text designed specifically for your level — written to reflect how Tagalog is actually spoken, not how textbooks pretend it is. We break down meaning in context so grammar and vocabulary feel natural and usable.
Guided Speaking
You practice producing real Tagalog — with prompts, light pressure, and space to think through your words.
Corrections & Next Steps
We review what to improve and you leave with a clear focus for practice before the next session.
Learning Doesn’t Stop When the Call Ends
This is structured coaching, not casual conversation practice. After every lesson, you receive clear guidance so your progress continues — and compounds — between sessions.
Personalized Homework
Every lesson ends with a tailored assignment built around your specific weak areas — not generic exercises pulled from a textbook.
- Written notes summarizing what was covered
- Corrections sent after every session
- A clear focus area to work on before we meet again
Targeted Exercises
Exercises are chosen with precision — designed to address the exact patterns and gaps identified during your lesson.
- Grammar drills shaped to your current level
- Vocabulary practice tied to real usage
- Speaking prompts you can practice on your own
Ongoing Support Between Lessons
You can practice short written exchanges through WhatsApp — helping you build confidence in everyday communication and making Tagalog part of your daily life.
- Practice typing or short conversations through WhatsApp
- Ask questions between lessons when something isn’t clear
- Continue building fluency through real-life written interaction
What Students Have Said
“Edison Miguel is seriously the best- he’s super patient and really cares about your learning. I feel like that’s a large reason why I’ve made so much progress with him! Definitely take his classes if you want to learn how to express and articulate your thoughts :)”
“I’ve had several classes with Miguel by now and I can say that he is one of the best foreign language teachers I’ve worked with. I speak five foreign languages and have studied four of them at professional language schools for my work and hands down Miguel is one of the very best language teachers I’ve worked with. He’s patient, articulate, good at explaining things, and understands the needs of the language learner. He’s easily able to adapt to different learning styles. I can’t recommend him enough. He’s the best.”
“Edison Miguel is a wonderful teacher that I would highly recommend to other Tagalog learners. He is always patient with me and explains my mistakes in a calm and clear manner. He provides very clear learning materials, and reading that is appropriate for the student’s level. Whenever I have a question, no matter how simple, he is always happy to answer it. I would strongly recommend Edison Miguel to any learner, no matter the level.”

The Teacher Behind the Method
I speak 7+ languages — so I know what it genuinely feels like to start from zero, struggle through unfamiliar grammar, and hesitate before speaking. My approach to teaching Tagalog is shaped by that lived experience. I design lessons from the learner’s perspective because I’ve been one.
I’m Edison Miguel, born and raised in the Philippines. Before teaching full-time, I worked in the pharmaceutical industry and in geographic information systems. That analytical background shapes how I structure lessons — clear progression, pattern recognition, and measurable improvement.
After my corporate stint, I moved to Europe to teach — first as an English language assistant in Madrid, then privately. I later lived in the Czech Republic and Lithuania while studying environmental engineering. Teaching and learning across cultures deeply influenced how I think about communication and education.
I’ve traveled to 40+ countries, which reshaped how I understand Filipino identity. I carry my culture both as an insider and as someone who has observed it from the outside. Students don’t just learn grammar — they gain cultural depth and context.
These experiences led me to create the Comprehensible Tagalog Podcast and tagalogpodcast.com — a platform where learners can listen, read transcripts, and engage with authentic Tagalog in one structured environment.
As a multilingual learner, I’ve self-studied French and Spanish, speak conversational Italian and Portuguese, and have functional Russian and Czech. Because I’ve learned languages as an adult, I understand hesitation and mental blocks — which is why my lessons are structured, patient, and built to make mistakes safe.
Outside teaching, I play guitar, drums, harmonica, and piano. I enjoy basketball, chess, street photography, writing, hiking, and travel — having visited more than 40 countries. These interests naturally shape my lessons as well: conversations feel real, dynamic, and grounded in lived experience rather than scripted classroom scenarios.
